Beginner FAQ
The most common questions before buying a camera.
Smartphones are so good now — do I actually need a camera?
Smartphones have advanced rapidly with computational photography, but they still can't match the shallow depth of field from a bright prime lens or the physical shutter response time. If you want to capture exactly the shot you envisioned at exactly the right moment, a camera wins.

Go mirrorless. Canon, Nikon, and Sony have stopped developing new DSLR models, and mirrorless lens lineups are expanding far faster. Only consider a DSLR if you're buying used to keep costs down.

The kit zoom is great for exploring different focal lengths, but the maximum aperture is slow, which limits background blur. Shoot with the kit for 3 months, figure out which focal length you use most, then add a prime. This wastes the least money.

Check the shutter count, sensor for dust or scratches, and mount pin condition. DSLRs typically last 50,000–100,000 actuations; mirrorless lifespan varies depending on electronic shutter use. Always test-shoot in person before buying.
